How UV lighting works
Before answer this question let see what is UV Lighting.
First, let’s review the concept of UV. UV, or ultraviolet, or ultraviolet, is an electromagnetic wave with a wavelength between 10nm and 400nm. UV of different wave band can be divided into UVA, UVB and UVC.
UVA: the wavelength is long, between 320-400nm, which can penetrate the clouds and glass into the room and the car, and can penetrate into the dermis of the skin, causing sunburn. UVA can be subdivided into uva-2 (320-340nm) and UVA-1 (340-400nm).
UVB: the wavelength is in the middle, between 280-320nm. It will be absorbed by the ozone layer, causing sunburn and skin redness, swelling, heat and pain. In serious cases, blisters or peeling will occur.
UVC: the wavelength is between 100-280nm, but because the wavelength below 200nm is vacuum ultraviolet, it can be absorbed by air, so the wavelength of UVC that can cross the atmosphere is between 200-280nm, the shorter and the more dangerous the wavelength is, but because it can be blocked by the ozone layer, only a small amount will reach the surface of the earth ball.
How UVC works on sterilization
UV can destroy the molecular structure of DNA (Bacilli) or RNA (Virus) of microorganisms, and make bacteria die or cannot reproduce, so as to achieve the goal of sterilization.

Historically, mercury lamp was the only choice for UV sterilization. However, Minamata Convention on mercury has entered into force for China since August 16, 2017. The Convention requires that the production, import and export of mercury containing products specified in the Convention shall be prohibited from January 1, 2021, and mercury lamp shall also be listed here. Therefore, there is not much time left for mercury lamp, and UVC LED is the only reliable alternative.
